She has been a beauty editor since she was 21 years old and over the past decade Elise Wilson has literally slathered, swatched and trialled thousands of the best there is to buy in cosmetics.
It’s safe to say that she is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all the things that make our faces prettier, our hair more luscious and our skin glow, but have you ever wondered what a beauty editor uses on herself?
We got the chance to sit down with Elise and delve straight into her beauty bag to see what she swears by, what skin treatments are worth knowing about and why everyone needs to get on to niacinamide!
What are the at-home beauty treatments you’ve been loving during lockdown?
Oooh I’ve been really enjoying dying my own hair. The lovely team at Edwards and Co have whipped up two batches of custom colour for me over the lockdown and the richness of their dyes are amazing. Obviously my hair is just all-over brunette so it’s pretty easy to not muck it up, but they have custom kits and hair tutorials for blondes and redheads too, making it so accessible for everyone.
I’ve just ordered a professional grade DermaPen skin needling kit too and I’m so excited to try it. I was having needling done professionally before lockdown, so this will just make things so much easier.
As a beauty editor your skincare routine must be so lengthy, what are some of your favourite products and why?
Yes, I try and curb the amount of steps I do morning and night but there’s just too many great products to try! However I am just one face and one skin-type, so I stick to a lot of vitamin C and niacinamide serums that work well to brighten, tighten and reduce congestion in my skin. Paula’s Choice Naicinamide Serum and SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic are my go tos for day. I am obsessed with sleep masks and have recently fallen in love with Habitual Beauty’s new Hydrating Sleep Mask. I wake up with such plump juicy skin it’s great.
We all know that SPF should be worn every day, but now we’re heading into summer can you recommend any great ones for us to invest in?
I can’t go anywhere without SPF! It is so important, but I don’t like ones that I can feel on my skin like a greasy film. My go-to’s for my face are Ultra Violet’s Supreme Screen SPF50, and Ultraceuticals Daily Moisturiser 50+ Hydrating formula. Both worth their weight in gold. As for your body, Bondi Sands’ Hydra UV Protect Body Lotion is also amazing, I used up about four tubes last summer.
How has your beauty routine changed over the years?
I’m most definitely a ‘less is more’ kinda girl now. I used to completely hide my complexion under heavy foundation and matte powders, so I’m really glad the trends have changed and it’s all about glow now. I’m not sure if it’s because everyone else is doing it or if I’m just older now, but my skin loves everything cream based. Powders look so muddy on me and make my skin look so porous and lined, but creams give my skin the colour it needs but also blend so seamlessly.
Once you’ve tried a serum foundation like Trinny London’s BFF Cream, you’ll never look back honestly.
Oh and brows. There’s not a day that I don’t apply my brow mascara to add some definition and fluffy volume!
When it comes to makeup, do we really need to spend lots for the best quality?
Great question! Makeup is one area of beauty that you can save your pennies on. You don’t have to jazz up your face with Dior and Chanel to look amazing, because brands like Morphe, Mecca Max, NYX and MCo Beauty (which have the best dupes) are making luxe feeling makeup so much more accessible. One of my favourite products that I use every single day is the Rimmel London Lasting Radiance Concealer, it’s $18 from Chemist Warehouse.
You’re a bit of a hair chameleon and have changed up your hair colour lots over the years. How do you keep it shiny and healthy?
Oh yes I have, but my crazy hair colour days are well are truly behind me now. I loved swapping from blonde to brunette to copper and back again, but unfortunately my locks can’t handle the bleach – no matter how much Olaplex I apply!
I’m big on great quality shampoo and conditioners, and one I’m loving at the moment is Coco & Eve’s Super Hydrating Duo. They smell like coconuts and leave my hair feeling like silk. Since lockdown last year I’ve made it my priority to do a hair mask once a week to really nourish my strands back to life, and absolutely love the Davines range of masks.
For those wanting a bit of a hair glow up post lockdown, what’s trending right now in both colours and cuts?
For a hair update, most girls could try a longer curtain fringe. They’re so cute and every celeb from Selena Gomez to J.Lo is rocking it at the moment. Short BOB’s above the shoulder are very much still chic, but also so are long layers if you’re wanting to keep your post-lockdown length like I am.
As for colour, think caramel! Gorgeous, light toffee tones through both blondes and brunettes would be the easiest summer update, especially framing the face.
What hair tools should we be spending our money on this summer?
I absolutely love my Dyson hairdryer, but realise that it is very pricey. For a beachy, summer vibe you can’t go wrong with something like the Mermade Hair Waver. I use mine all the time, and if I’m feeling lazy I just do bigger sections.
Tell us what treatments you’ve booked in for yourself when we’re allowed?
First of all it will be my Botox and filler top up! I’m now three months overdue for both and it’s killing me. Next will be my teeth whitening at Sparkling White Smile, they do such a great job, it’s quick and the results are just phenomenal. Lastly, I just missed out on getting facial Mono Threads at Face by SM in Paddington because we went into lockdown, so I’ll be getting that to tighten up around my jaw and eyes. It’s apparently a bit painful and can cause some bruising, but the skin tightening effects look amazing on the before and after photos I’ve seen.
What’s one of the best beauty treatments you’ve ever had?
I have two actually. Firstly, a Hydrodermabrasion is a gamechanger to suck out all the buildup in your skin as well as deeply exfoliate and infuse vitamins and minerals back in.
And secondly, I would say laser tattoo removal. I’ve had all my tattoos removed now and it’s so fascinating to me how it works. Best decision I ever made was getting rid of those tatt’s that I got when I was 17!
All-time fave beauty buy?
My Rodan + Fields Pore Cleansing Skincare System is a game changer. I use it once a month at home to suck all the gunk out of my pores. So satisfying!
For daytime I absolutely love Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Dew. I get stopped and asked what I’m wearing with this one.
Nude or bright lips?
I’m a bright lips girl, always. My go-to red is MAC’s Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick in Feels So Grand – it literally stays on all day and is the best red I’ve ever tried.
